An explosion close to San Francisco International Airport has fit several homes on fire, with a area petrol station apparently by the centre of the huge fire, witnesses said.
Footage showed a huge fire in what appeared to be a residential area in San Bruno, south of the San Francisco city centre.
"I heard a sound like a low-flying airplane, at that moment all of a sudden the house shook," said Tina DiIoia, who was with her baby in their condominium after the explosion occurred nearly half a mile away.
"after that there was another explosion. I went outside and there was waste falling from the air."
The Federal Aviation Administration said it had no record a plane crash near the scene.
CNN reported that a number of people had been injured while a area hospital spokesperson told ABC America that her hospital was treating one man and had been told another casualty was on the way.
A area pastor told CNN he witnessed a "devastating explosion" to caused the fast-moving fire.
Pastor Leigh Bishop of the Church of Highlands said two people from his church had lost their homes and by least one person had burns injuries.
Area utility officials were investigating whether the source of the explosion was a great natural gas pipeline.
